Sediment Sampling

Posted on Wednesday January 27, 2016

Sediment sampling was conducted as part of the ecological risk assessment stage to characterize the extents of impacted sediment.  Impacted sediment was limited to a 250 metre section of river centred between the rail bridge and the Old Gogama Road bridge (remedial area).  A phased sediment removal approach was selected to remove impacted sediment within the established remedial area.  CN maximized the removal of the fine particles where the oil was entrained, while maintaining the shape of the river channel, and minimizing the disturbance to fish habitats.  Learn more about the sediment removal process

Once the sediment removal was complete, confirmatory sediment samples were collected.  Results from these samples indicated that the remaining sediment did not pose an unacceptable risk to ecological receptors and that no additional sediment remediation was required.

CN is currently preparing a comprehensive sediment remediation report which will be shared with the regulatory agencies.
