Fish Tissue Sampling

CN has been collecting fish specimens from local fishermen including northern pike, whitefish, walleye (pickerel), cisco, ling (bowfin), and yellow perch.  We need more specimens less than 10 centimeters in size of all species.  CN is asking local fishermen to drop off specimens at the CN Public Information Centre, located at the Gogama Community Centre. The specimens will be sent to a third-party laboratory for analysis and testing for the presence of any oil products.

The analyses of the first samples of the initial fish study are complete.  A report is currently being compiled and will be released within the next few days.  Analyses of the fish tissues included alkylated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), percent moisture, and percent lipids (fat).  The results of the fish (pickerel/walleye) collected between March 27th and 30th indicate that all analyzed parameters are below the established recommended limits, assuming a consumption rate of 49 grams of fish/day.  Based on these results, harmful effects are not anticipated for those consuming fish from this watercourse. 

The next set of results for the additional fish sampled are anticipated to be received within the next three weeks.
